AMD confirms that its GPU drivers are overclocking CPUs

AMD has confirmed to the portal Tom's Hardware that a bug in your GPU driver is changing the AMD Ryzen CPUs settings in the BIOS without permission. This condition has been shown to cause Ryzen CPUs to self-overclock without the user's knowledge or consent.

An AMD representative commented that are aware of a problem in the AMD software package which is adjusting certain AMD processor settings for some users. They are investigating the issue and will share more information as soon as they can.

There is a serious problem with AMD GPU drivers

Reports about this problem started appearing on various social networks recently. Several users have been reporting that their CPUs had been throttled without their consent. The problem was subsequently investigated and located in AMD GPU drivers.

AMD originally added support for automatic CPU overclocking through its GPU drivers last year. The idea was that by adding a module Ryzen Masters in Radeon Adrenalin GPU drivers, overclocking experience would be simplified. Users with an AMD Ryzen CPU and an AMD Radeon GPU could thus use a single interface to overclock both components. Previously, both the GPU driver and AMD's Ryzen Master software were required.

Overclocking an AMD Ryzen CPU requires software to manipulate BIOS settings, just like other software overclocking utilities. In the case of AMD, this may simply mean enabling the Precision Boost Overdrive automatic overclocking feature. This function does all the work to offer automatic overclocking of components with a single centralized click. Applying a GPU profile in the AMD driver may alter the BIOS settings in order to enable automatic overclocking. This is a problem because it is good that overclocking damages components and in the case of AMD Ryzen CPU, it automatically voids the warranty.

AMD software typically requires you to click a warning to acknowledge that you understand the risks associated with overclocking and that it voids your warranty. But that doesn't happen in this case. AMD is working to resolve this issue and will share more information soon. For now, we recommend that anyone who does not have quality cooling to compensate for overclocking, and has both AMD CPUs and GPUs, not attempt to overclock using AMD software.
