AMD to start production of the B550 and A520 chipsets in Q1 2020

AMD's strategy with motherboards for the new Ryzen 3000 processors is quite confusing. Currently we only have the X570 chipset high-end offering support for PCIe 4.0. The logical thing is to think that the company would have left the 400 Series chipsets for the mid-range and entry. ChinaTimes ensures that the B550 and A520 chipsets will start production in the first quarter of this year.

Of course, one wonders what sense this makes more than half a year after these processors were launched on the market. Not the time that has passed since the Ryzen 3000 were launched, but the Ryzen 4000 should arrive in summer. A very long time to launch the mid-range and entry-level chipset.

AMD will produce the B550 and A520 chipsets now

These two chipsets, the B550 for mid-range motherboards and the entry-level A520 will go into production now. If we want a cheaper motherboard than the X570, we have the X470, B450 and A420. Perhaps an AMD strategy to make more money, offering only a chipset compatible with the PCIe 4.0 interface.

One of the big problems with the Ryzen 3000 is in the price of the X570 motherboards. The moderately robust motherboards are above 200 euros, except for a few models, quite simple. It is far from the great catalog of motherboards for the Ryzen 2000, where we had solutions for all pockets.

It would be ASMedia who would be in charge of the mass production of these new chipsets, started in Q1 2020. The availability of motherboards based on the B550 and A520 chipset should occur in the first half of 2020. Curiously, in Computex we could see the Ryzen 4000 for desktop with new chipset.

Rumors indicate that the B550 chipset will eventually use PCIe 3.0, it will not support PCIe 4.0. Perhaps that is why these motherboards have not been developed to date. Although who knows right now.
