AMD Adrenalin 19.7.1 drivers worsen the performance of Polaris graphics cards compared to 19.5.2

Significant performance loss with Radeon Adrenalin 19.7.1 drivers compared to Adrenalin 19.5.2 on AMD Polaris graphics cards.

The best thing about AMD is that its drivers for graphics cards manage to improve their performance. To support the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700, the company released the Radeon Adrenalin 19.7.1. These new drivers are clearly focused on Navi and seem to optimize or prioritize for RDNA. Well, this is a problem, because there is a big loss of performance in Polaris graphics.

PCGamer has bought the gaming performance between the Radeon Adrenalin 19.5.2 driver and the Radeon Adrenalin 19.7.1. For this they have used the RX 590 graphics card and the difference is quite important. The difference between both drivers in some cases is up to 22% loss with the new drivers.

Performance drop with the latest AMD drivers

A large number of games have been tested. The benchmarks are 1080p with medium graphics and 1080p, 1440p and 4K in the highest possible quality in the game. Normal is a difference between 2.5% and 9% loss of performance with the AMD RX 590.

The games that suffer the most are Forza Horizon 4 which loses between 11% in 4K and up to 22% in 1080p with medium graphic quality. Follow the Hitman, which loses 8% performance to almost 19% in 1080p Ultra. Total War: Warhammer 2 loses 12% in 1080p Medium and Assassin's Creed Odyssey loses 10% in 1080p Medium and more than 15% in 1080p Ultra.

It is only improved in one game and it is the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with an improvement less than 2%. But it is that in 4K with high graphic quality, 0.4% of performance is lost in the AMD RX 590.

We do not know if this happens with other Polaris graphs and therefore GCN, but it is more than possible. At the moment it has been verified in the RX 590. We will be attentive in case more data comes out with other graphs, but come on, it is not a good thing. If you haven't updated and you have a Polaris GPU, don't and if you have, uninstall drivers and install 19.5.2.
