New AGESA microcode allows Ryzen 3000s to reach the specified Boost frequency

AMD Ryzen 3000 processors with AGESA 1.0.0.3BBA microcode already manage to reach the specified Boost frequency in the processors.

In recent weeks, there has been much discussion regarding the Boost frequencies of Ryzen 3000 processors. Several reports have been published on the matter, the largest being the one created by der8auer with direct support from AMD . The problem lies in the company's Precision Boost system, which has been altered through the AGESA microcode. The company has stated that it will release an update to reverse the issue.

Currently AMD is shipping the ComboAM4 1.0.0.3ABBA which is already being distributed among manufacturers. This new UEFI firmware should stabilize the frequencies and allow them to reach the Boost specified by AMD. The company highlighted that the limitation had been implemented to extend the useful life of its processors.

AMD's new AGESA microcode would fix Boost problems

A BIOS for MSI motherboards containing this new microcode was recently leaked on ChipHell. Tom's Hardware accessed this BIOS and installed it on MSI's MEG X570 Creator motherboard. They then installed Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 7 3700X processors to verify if the problem was resolved.

They have made a small comparison between AGESA 1.0.0.3ABBA and AGESA 1.0.0.3AB. With the new BIOS, the Ryzen 7 3700X reaches 4.4GHz without problems in all cases, while with the old one it only reached 4.375GHz.

The Ryzen 9 3900X behaves somewhat differently with the new microcode. With the 1.0.0.3AB distribution this processor stayed at 4.575GHz. The new BIOS brings this processor to 4.625GHz, a bit above 4.6GHz, which is its theoretical maximum Boost. It should be noted that in the POV-Ray and CineBench benchmarks the processor with the new BIOS drops to 4.25GHz.

Tom's Hardware verifies that AMD's new AGESA microcode improves processor performance. This is because the temperature thresholds of the processors would have been changed.
