AMD RX 5950 XT aims to be a high performance gaming graphics

A few hours ago, AMD's financial results were released, which have been very good. Shortly before the announcement, the DIE sizes of the company's next GPUs were announced. Now some more information about what AMD is preparing is released. Specifically, some data has been leaked regarding the RX 5950XT, which we will take with one more rumor.

While the specifications of the upcoming RDNA2s are promising, it is very difficult to place them in time. In the first place, because we do not have concrete launch data for these charts and their complete specifications. But in the second place, NVIDIA is already finalizing the launch of the Ampere graphics.

AMD RX 5950 XT, a beast for gaming

Despite the fact that this rumor, like all those that have appeared, seem to be focused on the comparison with the NVIDIA Turing architecture. The truth is that AMD should not compete with the current NVIDIA architecture, but with Ampere. And competing with Ampere does not seem to be easy, as NVIDIA will move to 7nm and a spectacular performance jump is expected.

What we do know is that the GPU die, or silicon, will have dimensions of 505 mm² . We must keep in mind that RDNA2 will be the first architecture to support ray tracing technology . The increase in die size compared to its predecessors would indicate the presence of dedicated hardware for ray tracing.

It's worth noting that the RX 5700 XT's die size is 251mm² and it has 40 Compute Units. The Radeon VII, on the other hand, had a die size of 331mm² and 60 Compute Units.

According to rumors, we should see 80 Compute Units on the RX 5950 XT, which does not seem logical. The logical thing would be to see a graph with some variants of the Tensor Cores and RT Cores for ray tracing. We would therefore rule out seeing a graph with 80 Compute Units and a zillion Stream Processors.

Regarding performance, we can expect a big leap as they are already the first GPUs with pure RDNA architecture. The current RDNAs still have elements of GCN, since radically changing the architecture would have been a major problem. Anyway, until the end of the year which is when these RDNA2s would come out, thousands of things can happen.
