RayTracing on AMD RX 6000 will only run with non-proprietary APIs

The launch of the AMD RX 6000 with support for RayTracing technology opens a new scenario. Thus begins a new battlefield between the only two manufacturers of dedicated graphics, at least for the moment. It seems that AMD wants to invite all developers to use non-proprietary RayTracing API technologies for compatibility with their GPUs.

If a developer creates a RayTracing game based on the NVIDIA DirectX RTX or NVIDIA Vulkan RTX API, this game will not be compatible with AMD GPUs. This is logical, since they will be using proprietary solutions from NVIDIA. Developers can do it, but they will need to add specific optimizations for it to run on AMD graphics.

AMD invites the use of non-proprietary APIs for RayTracing

AMD will support all RayTracing titles that use industry standards, including the Microsoft DXR API and the upcoming Vulkan RayTracing API. Games using proprietary RayTracing APIs and extensions will not be supported. AMD in a statement.

It makes all the logic that AMD would like developers to use the Microsoft DXR and Vulkan RayTracing APIs. NVIDIA will now have competition in ray tracing and therefore it would be logical for developers to create games for both graphics solutions. Additionally, creating optimizations for individual vendor solutions would be very difficult.

And all this according to the current panorama that could end up changing in the next year. Intel plans to launch dedicated graphics with RayTracing support in 2021, although we don't know much about it. It is said that Intel could give special support to Vulkan for ray tracing as it is an open source library. So with two players betting on non-proprietary APIs, developers will no longer be tied to using NVIDIA solutions.
