AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryzen 9 3900X: fewer cores than expected but good price

The number of cores, frequencies, TDP, prices and release dates of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryzen 9 3900X revealed.

Lisa Su's presentation at Computex 2019 left us with mixed feelings. We were pleasantly surprised by Navi, which will be called the AMD RX 5000 Series and will pose a serious challenge to NVIDIA. A slight disappointment was the Ryzen 3000 series, processors that generated a lot of hype but ultimately fell short. While they represent a significant performance leap and will be very competitively priced, they have lost core counts. In the end, we'll have a maximum of 12 cores for the Ryzen 9 3900X, which is disappointing. It will be launched alongside the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Ryzen 7 3800X.

AMD Ryzen 3000 disappoints a bit, but attracts the price

We start with the simplest, the Ryzen 7 3700X with 8 cores and 16 threads at a base frequency of 3.6GHz that will reach 4.4GHz in Boost mode. This processor has a 65W TDP and is priced at $ 329. It follows the Ryzen 7 3800X with also 8 cores and 16 processing threads at a base frequency of 3.9GHz and a Boost mode of 4.5GHz. This processor has a TDP of 105W and will be priced at $ 399. Finally we have the Ryzen 9 3900X with 12 cores and 24 threads working at a base frequency of 3.8Ghz and that will reach 4.6GHz in Boost mode. It will have a TDP of 105W and it will cost $ 499.

We are very puzzled by the TDP issue. How can it be that two Ryzen with the same number of cores and practically the same frequency have a 40W TDP difference? How can a 12-core, 24-thread processor that reaches higher Boost frequency than an 8-core and 16-thread processor have the same TDP? Here's something weird that doesn't quite square me, honestly.

Although it is slightly disappointing to have spoken of 16 cores for the AMD Ryzen 9 and that they are less than those that have appeared in the leaks, apparently biased looking for disinformation. These new processors offer us an apparent good performance, a large number of cores at a great price. We assume that in the coming weeks we will know more data about these processors.
