AMD has a new low-power chip for laptops with powerful integrated graphics. Companies like Asus, Aokzoe and Ayaneo are already incorporating it into their portable PCs designed to move games. This is the AMD Ryzen 7840U, which was originally designed for thin and powerful laptops.
AMD claims its new chip can compete with Apple, outperforming the M.2 processor in the 2022 MacBook Air . It says it outperforms it " by up to 75 percent in application performance ." When compared to Intel's Core i7-1360P, it outperforms it by even more in both productivity and graphics.
AMD boasts new high-performance and low-power Ryzen 7840U APU
Compared to the previous generation, this represents a significant performance increase. AMD's director of customer relations, Matthew Hurwitz, tells me that the chip offers up to 24% more " application performance " than AMD's 6850H chip.
They claim it " can do all that while delivering leading efficiency for exceptional battery life ." However, they haven't provided exact battery life figures, which is crucial for a work laptop. The company may not yet know the exact figures, as all these tests were performed on a reference board, not a laptop. It's worth noting that Apple's M2 laptops are the current champions in battery life, so this is important information.
Hurwitz also states that we can expect more information regarding battery life and FPS in games . AMD hasn't been lagging behind lately in the Windows arena. Framework, Razer, Acer, HP, and Lenovo will use these chips in various models of their laptops with their own designs.
The AMD 7840U isn't the only one in the new 15-30 watt U-series component lineup. There will also be components from the Ryzen 9, Ryzen 7, and Ryzen 3 series, featuring three different levels of graphics: a 12-core Radeon 780M, an eight-core Radeon 760M, and a quad-core Radeon 740M. According to The Verge, all these specifications suggest that the AMD Z1 chip used in Steam Deck rivals is likely a modified Ryzen 5 7540U with an integrated Radeon 740M GPU.
