AMD presents the new EPYC Rome architecture Zen2 @ 7nm with up to 64 cores
Introduced by AMD the new AMD EPYC Rome processors, which will have up to 64 cores and that pass over the Intel Xeon.
Early this morning, AMD officially unveiled the EPYC Rome processors . These new processors are based on Zen 2 at 7nm and promise significant improvements. Firstly, the number of cores has been doubled compared to the first generation of EPYC processors, and the IPC (instructions per cycle) has also been increased. Furthermore, after many years, this allows AMD to take the lead in the server processor market.
Intel continues to release 14nm Xeons and it won't be until the first half of 2020 that the first 10nm Xeons arrive. Until then, AMD offers companies better processors in performance, consumption and, of course, price. You can get many more cores for much less cost with a heavy impact on performance.
AMD has officially presented the EPYC Rome
As a top-of-the-range processor we have the AMD EPYC 7742, which has 64 cores and 128 processing threads. This processor works at a base frequency of 2.25MHz and reaches 3.4GHz in Boost mode. This processor has a 256MB L3 cache and a 225W TDP. The most interesting thing is its price, of 6 dollars, much less than its most direct competitor, the Intel Xeon Platinum 950M. Intel's processor has 8280 cores and 28 threads running at 56GHz and reaching 2.7GHz. It has a 4.0W TDP and is priced at $ 205.
From AMD they have wanted to make it clear that they currently have the most powerful x86 processor in the world. The interesting thing is that despite the EPYC 7742 having more than twice as many cores as the Intel, it is 'only' 97% more powerful. An interesting fact, since it suggests that Zen2 is very, very good, but that it still lacks a dot.
Regarding the rest of the possibilities, this processor supports up to 8TB of DDR4 ECC @ 3200MHz. It has support for 128 PCIe lanes, while Intel's most powerful Xeon only supports 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes. AMD has wanted to avoid problems and has integrated a co-processor to increase the security and cryptography of the data.
AMD's EPYC Rome represents a 23% increase in the IPC compared to the first generation, thanks to being in 7nm. Internally, it will have up to eight 7nm core sets and a 14nm Northbridge, which reduces costs.
