AMD to supply EPYC processors for weather forecasting in Europe
AMD has announced a major contract from Atos to develop the BullSequana XH2000 supercomputer. This new supercomputer will be for the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts. We are talking about a research center and meteorological service that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and that will be located in the Italian city of Bologna.
The system will be based on 42U BullSequana XH2000 rack systems with up to 32 compute blades. The new systems are based on AMD EPYC 7742 processors, although we do not know how many per system. Each blade is 1U type and is water-cooled, allowing it to accommodate three computing nodes. These systems support multiple platforms, be it AMD EPYC processors, Intel Xeon and even NVIDIA Volta V100 graphics.

AMD wins a succulent contract from Atos
Regarding the AMD EPYC 7742 processorNote that it offers 64 cores and 128 threads based on the Zen2 @ 7nm architecture. This system has a base frequency of 2.25GHz and can reach 3.4GHz in Boost mode. In addition, this processor has 256MB of L3 cache, 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and a TDP of 225W.
The maximum configuration of the BullSequana XH2000 allows up to 200.000 AMD Zen2 @ 7nm cores to be installed, which is equivalent to 3.125 AMD EPYC processors. Each of the nodes has 256GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 8 Petabytes of storage in Luster format. This offers us a computational performance of 6.4 Petaflops, almost triple the version based on Intel processors accompanied by 320 NVIDIA V100 graphics, which offers up to 2.5 Petaflops.
The installation of these systems will begin in Bologna this year. The goal is for it to begin its work in 2021, allowing researchers from more than 30 countries to use it. The purpose of this system is to make high resolution 10km weather predictions.
