AMD would be preparing a graphics called 'Big Navi' that competes with the high-end NVIDIA RTX

AMD's event at CES 2020 would have shattered Intel's plans, changing its conference at the last minute. After the conference, Lisa Su, CEO of the company, would have huddled with "a small number of journalists" for an impromptu round of questions. The big question, the one we all want to know, has been taken by Anandtech and transcribed.

It seems that the journalist Gordon Ung, from the PC World, would have asked about the existence of something superior to the RX 5700 XT. Su would have replied that they had something called "Big Navi", a GPU capable of competing with the high-end of NVIDIA. A brutal information of a product that they would be hiding.

Hides a graphics Navi that rivals NVIDIA's high-end

Do you think AMD has to have a high-level competitor in the dedicated graphics market?

Gordon Ung from PC World
[Laughs] I know Reddit want a high-end Navi. They should expect that we have a high-end Navi, and that it is important to have it. The dedicated graphics market, especially in the high-end, is very important to us. So hopefully we will have a high-end Navi GPU, although I don't usually comment on unannounced products.

It seems that the company would be working or finalizing a bomb that we know nothing about at the moment. AMD's strategy, at least in the graphics market, is quite confusing. Initially I launch the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700, for last December launch the RX 5500 XT and now announce the RX 5600 XT. There is no logical order of launches and announcements, something that makes everything more confusing.

It is true that RDNA leaves GCN behind, which is perhaps the most important thing right now. GCN was an outdated hybrid architecture for gaming and pro segment. It had the problem of high consumption and extreme dependence on memory bandwidth. This is why Navi used HBM2, because the memory bandwidth was much higher than GDDR5. Logically, this meant a brutal overcharge that ended up impacting the market price of the graphics.

Statements, apparently, from an AMD assembler

We have spoken to the board members about Big Navi and they are very excited about 2020 in general. Based on what you heard from AMD, the next generation RDNA (which could be RDNA + or RDNA2) is more energy efficient than RDNA1. They don't have any specific information to share, such as die size or number of compute units, but they are confident that they will be on par if they are not better than the current high-end GeForce RTX series.

Say sources from an assembler working with AMD

Here we no longer talk about the RDNA architecture used in the RX 5700 XT, for example, we talk about evolution. An evolution that they indicate can compete with the high-end NVIDIA RTX that is already on the market. This assembler states that: “Their biggest concern is the arrival of the 3000nm GeForce RTX 7 series as they just don't know what to expect. The sooner Big Navi arrives, the better ”

Of course, the problem is that this year NVIDIA will launch the Ampere architecture based on the 7nm lithographic process. A brutal leap from Turing, which is based on 12nm and an outstanding power leap is expected. The first rumors speak of up to 50% more performance with respect to Turing, although this is a stupid. The logical thing would be between 15-25% and we are already talking about a very important performance extra.

Finally this assembler indicates that "they expect Big Navi to be shown in June or July". June is when Computex takes place, so it could be when they show up and July, a year after the RX 5700 XT was launched, could be when it will hit the market.
