AMD Vega 10 687F: 1GB C8 with benchmarks and new information in 3D Mark, still below 1070.
About a month ago there was a general despair because almost nothing was known about AMD Vega and many came to think that this new and promising architecture was still in a primitive phase of development, nothing is further from the truth apparently because during the last weeks have begun to arrive new information and benchmarks that confirm that its departure is imminent, in this case we have been able to know new specifications and tests in the 3DMark benchmarking software.

As we have already known, the 687F: C1 model will be the entry and therefore the simplest, it will have 8GB of VRAM memory running at about 700 MHz and the chip will work at a frequency of 1200 MHz (both quite modest, hopefully when come out AMD Vega is more polished and offer higher frequencies, therefore better results than those shown now). That said, it should be mentioned that all the tests have been carried out with a Ryzen 1800X, which we cannot know if it really benefits directly or not (we can predict that it does, due to the compatibility between AMD itself, but that, we can only predict) . The reason why these memories run at such a low frequency is because the HBM2 standard is not as sophisticated as the classic GDDR5 and GDDR5X.

Apart from these new specifications about the memories and frequencies we have also been able to know these results in the famous 3DMark bechmarks software. In this we can see how our model in question, 687F: C1, reaches a score of 17801 points. For those who are a bit lost with these figures, let's see some references, this result is the same as a Titan X gets (do not get excited that it is the Maxwell, not even the Pascal), on the other hand we have a performance 1400 points higher to the RX Fury X and finally we find that it is 100 below the Nvidia GTX 1070 (of course already a long way from the GTX 1080).

Looking at all this new data on the table, we can realize that part of the dust and hype that AMD has raised during all these last months is beginning to dissipate and we have already been able to get an idea of where Vega can and wants to position itself. Although for now the entry model, 687F: C1, is the one we know the most about, we already get the idea that it will have two older sisters that will face the GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti.
Finally, we are going to make a general assessment of how we see the younger sister of the Vega family. Many will be tremendously disappointed to see that this first model does not destroy the GTX 1070 in synthetic benchmarks as was initially speculated. But let's face it and be forward-thinking, the 687F: C1 still has a long way to go as this is an engineering model. The frequencies of your HBM2 memories and of your chip will surely be increased, hopefully these improvements will provide you with the necessary power to get above the Nvidia 1070.
If the latest statements from the CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, are fulfilled, we should be able to see how Vega reaches the market this June, if in less than two months. For this same reason it is quite clear that during the Computex that will take place in Tapei (Thailand) from May 30 to June 3, we will be able to see everything that AMD can offer us about Vega. In the opinion of an average consumer, if Vega reaches the market with a very adequate price and consumption, although it does not destroy Nvidia and it already has Volta ready, we will be able to see good alternatives in the high range (a matter that has mostly belonged to the side green). All competition is good for the consumer as it lowers the monopoly prices and hopefully AMD does not disappoint.

Now but here to criticize the frequencies, but what is the bandwidth? Because maybe HBM2 at 7000Mhz would slap the Gddr5 and even the GDDR6 that has not yet come out of epic proportions
@elpiromano:disqus I was thinking that maybe gddr5 and 5x are already left behind with the 2000 series of nvidia (gddr6) and 600 of amd (hbm).. since gddr6 can lower the Memory Speed of the chips from 16 Gbps to 9Gbps but taking advantage of the lower consumption compared to gddr5 .. let's say 3 (2gb per chip) x 64 "Gb/s Bandwidth" = 192-Bit Memory Bus..
Personally, it was what I expected and “it’s very good”, as you say at the end of the note, if it comes with a good price it will surely sell very well. For those who were about to buy those RX 500 remakes, please don’t waste your money, wait a little while, Vega is just around the corner.
