AMD Zen4 coming in 2021 could support PCIe 5.0

It's funny how Intel and AMD have expanded their war of cores and frequencies to take it to different technologies. AMD boasts of being the first to support PCIe 4.0 in its processors, although its use is limited, so much so that the Ryzen Mobile 4000 APUs do not support this interface. Well, AMD wants to give another blow of effect by supporting PCIe 5.0 in the Zen4 and ahead of Intel.

We must bear in mind that PCIe 5.0 does bring relevant news with respect to PCIe 4.0, since PCIe 4.0 hardly brings improvements with respect to PCIe 3.0. One of the novelties is CLX, a communication system under the PCIe 5.0 protocol that allows interconnection of equipment in a cluster format.

AMD wants to be the first to support PCIe 5.0 and get ahead of Intel

Zen3 (Ryzen 3000) processors were the first to support PCIe 4.0. The improvement of PCIe 4.0 over PCIe 3.0 is minimal, only serving for M.2 NVMe SSDs. Regarding the graphics, the interface improvement represents only 1% performance improvement. AMD wants to repeat strategy and support PCIe 5.0 in Zen4, an interface that brings many improvements over PCIe 4.0.

There is no noticeable difference when it comes to the performance of the graphics cards. It's only seen on M.2 NVMe SSDs, which can go from 3.000MB / s in PCIe 3.0 to over 6.000MB / s under PCIe 4.0. But the truth is that these units are almost twice as expensive and few users end up buying them. AMD even in the Ryzen Mobile 4000 APUs do not integrate PCIe 4.0 because it is uninteresting for laptops.

Intel will not support PCIe 4.0 until 2021, much later than its competitor. But in 2021 the first Xeon Ice Lake-SP @ 10nm with support for PCIe 5.0 will arrive. Also, Rocket Lake-S processors with support for PCIe 2021 should arrive by the end of 5.0.

Likewise, both companies are raving about supporting technologies that at the moment of truth and for the average user do not contribute anything and only make the product more expensive.
