Intel's Benchmark of a Rocket Lake-S vs. an AMD Ryzen in Gaming

An Intel Rocket Lake-S processor offers better gaming performance than the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X under the Metro Exodus

We know that Intel will finally launch its Rocket Lake-S processors during the second quarter of this year. The company has showcased the gaming performance of these processors. Specifically, we see a benchmark of an Intel Rocket Lake-S processor , apparently an 8-core model, competing against the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. We can see that the Intel processor manages to outperform the AMD processor in gaming.

Rocket Lake-S processors are based on Cypress Cove @ 14nm cores. These cores are an import of the Sunny Cove @ 10nm cores for Tiger Lake-U / H processors. Being an architecture imported to a larger node, there is a loss of cores to control the temperature.

Benchmark Intel Rocket Lake-S against an AMD Ryzen processor

We must take this benchmark in its correct context. Intel processors tend to have higher clock rates than AMD Ryzen processors, hence the small difference in FPS. Many games use only one core, so the higher the frequency, the better the performance.

Although no details have been given about which processors were used, we can get an idea. The 12-core AMD Ryzen is the Ryzen 9 5900X, as confirmed by the Intel Gaming Twitter account . Regarding the Intel processor, it seems clear that it's the Core i9-11900K.

Both processors use an NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics card to power the Metro Exodus. The Intel processor offers 156.54FPS, while the AMD one stays at 147.43FPS.

Regarding the rest of the data, there is nothing that draws special attention. They will have 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes natively and USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (20G). New overclocking capabilities, new chipset and new Intel Xe integrated graphics are highlighted. Also, they will be compatible with Intel 400 Series chipset motherboards.
