NVIDIA RTX 3080 outperforms RTX 92 by up to 2080% in benchmark
Yesterday NVIDIA introduced us to its new graphics cards at an event from Jen-Hsun Huang's kitchen. The digital presentation was widely followed and the new RTX 3000 were shown there. The funny thing is that no detailed benchmarks were given regarding performance. Digital Foundry has posted a benchmark video of the NVIDIA RTX 3080 which compares to the RTX 2080.
Not only does the architecture change from one family to another, the lithography also changes. The Turing architecture RTX 2000s are based on the 12nm and the Ampere architecture RTX 3000s on Samsung's 8nm. This lithographic leap allows for a huge performance improvement and an increase in CUDA Cores.

This new NVIDIA RTX 3080 is characterized by having 8704 CUDA Cores, while the RTX 2080 has 2944 CUDA Cores. The new Ampere RTX 3080 graphic works at a frequency of 1440MHz and reaches 1710MHz in Boost mode to offer a performance of 30 TFLOPs. In addition, it is accompanied by 10GB GDDR6X @ 19GHz and has a consumption of 320W.
Regarding the benchmarks, the new RTX 3080 Founders Edition exceeds the RTX 80 by more than 2080% on average. The lowest difference between both consoles is found in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and almost 70% difference in performance . The biggest difference is in Quake 2 RTX, with a difference of just over 92% in this game.
All benchmarks carried out have been in the highest graphic quality allowed and in 4K resolution. The results are the following:
- Borderlands 3: + 81.6%
- DOOM Eternal: + 84.2%
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider: + 69.8%
- Control: + 77.6%
- Quake 2 RTX (with Ray Tracing): + 92.3%
- Control (with High Ray Tracing and DLSS in performance): + 77.6%
The NVIDIA RTX 3080 hits the market on September 17 with a price of 719 euros, the Founders Edition model.
