MSI releases BIOS with Resizable BAR support in AMD Threadripper

A few weeks ago AMD introduced us to the Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 architecture processors. These new processors are the first to support Resizable BAR technology (although AMDe calls it SAM). A technology that is not just a Ryzen 5000 thing. MSI has brought Resizable BAR technology to AMD Threadripper processors with a simple BIOS update.

Resizable BAR, for those who don't know, is a technology integrated within the PCIe 3.0 interface . This technology allows the processor to access all of the graphics card's VRAM, instead of the traditional 256MB. It's a solution that was pioneered in 2008 by AMD and HP, and was supported and implemented by PCI-SIG.

MSI brings Resizable BAR to motherboards for AMD Threadripper processors

MSI's new BIOS is in beta and has been developed for TRX40 chipset motherboards. Let us remember that the Resizable BAR technology allows to improve performance by up to 10%. This is achieved by eliminating the latency of the data request to the processor that it stores in RAM. Instead of storing data that the GPU may need in RAM, it stores it in the graphics card's VRAM.

According to MSI, enabling Resizable BAR allows for “improving GPU performance, including the AMD RX 6000 Series and NVIDIA RTX 3000.” This would confirm this morning’s rumor that NVIDIA could announce support for Resizable BAR tomorrow.

MSI has published a capture with the MSI TRX40-PRO motherboard, the Threadripper 3990X processor and an RX 6800. Thus, MSI is positioned to be the first to support this technology in workstation processors.

It's worth noting that the Threadripper 3000 series is based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture at 7nm. This allows all Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 4000U/H processors to support Resizable BAR.

In addition, from MSI they have said that they are already working to activate Resizable BAR in Intel Core-X. It seems like a matter of time before Intel Workstation processors support this technology.
