Borderlands 3: AMD Shows How Gaming Improves With Active Fidelity FX Technology
Published a comparison between Borderlands 3 with AMD Fidelity FX active and deactivated, noticing a slight graphical improvement.
AMD's policy regarding the various software tools it develops is to offer them free of charge. This allows it to differentiate itself from NVIDIA, which typically offers similar technologies at an additional cost. FidelityFX is a tool that enhances the graphic quality of an image, similar to NVIDIA's DLSS. Borderlands 3 implements FidelityFX , as the game was developed in direct collaboration with AMD.
It is common for NVIDIA and AMD to support developers to optimize games. The latest games that NVIDIA has directly collaborated on are easily identifiable because they implement RayTracing. AMD continues to collaborate with some studios like Gear Box (Borderlands 3 developers) with whom they have been working for a long time.
Borderlands 3 is much better graphically thanks to Fidelity FX
The good thing Fidelity FX has is that it is Open Source, so anyone can use this code. It can be implemented in games without additional cost or to optimize this tool or add elements to it. The interesting thing is that it also works on NVIDIA graphics and Intel iGPUs, so anyone can run it.
It would be a case similar to FreeSync. AMD FreeSync technology is based on VESA Adaptative Sync, which is open. AMD adapted it and it has become popular on monitors, to the point that NVIDIA has given its arm to twist. The company has launched the G-Sync Compatible certification, which indicates compatibility with NVIDIA standards.
AMD has collaborated with Gear Box and they have integrated different technologies into Borderlands 3. Not only has Fidelity FX been added, it also has GameCache or Radeon Anti-Lag, among others. The improvements over Fidelity FX are rather subtle, not as over the top as one might hope.
Above all, it better outlines the edges of some textures and improves the definition of the image. It is not a brutal jump, but anything that is to improve a little without additional cost is always appreciated. For DLSS you need an RTX 20 Series, the same as for RayTracing, but Fidelity FX works on any graphics card.
