They discover a Discord bug that slows down NVIDIA graphics cards

According to recent reports from users who have noticed their graphics cards performing worse, a recent Discord update is slowing down the memory clocks of graphics cards on some Nvidia GPUs. This update has introduced a bug that slows memory clocks by up to 200 Hz on some Nvidia models.

The affected GPUs include the RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti. All indications suggest that the RTX 3000 series graphics cards are the most affected, meaning the others are not impacted. Nvidia says it is working on a solution.

Discord was giving GPU issues

Reddit users and members of the Linus Tech Tips forum spotted the bug, and Nvidia was quick to acknowledge the issue and offer a temporary fix. If you notice your memory clocks dropping to as low as 200 Hz, you can download a GeForce 3D profile manager and apply the fix early. Full details are available in an Nvidia support article. But for those who prefer to wait for a more permanent fix, Nvidia says a solution will be rolled out to affected PCs "via an over-the-air update at a later date."

Discord recently began rolling out an update that enables streaming using the AV1 codec with GeForce RTX 4000 series cards. This update appears to have introduced memory clock issues on some RTX 3000 series cards, but Reddit users with RTX 4000 series cards haven't experienced the same slowdowns.

The Discord update went live last week, allowing RTX 40-series owners to stream AV1 up to 4K and 60fps at 8Mbps, if they subscribed to the paid Discord Nitro service. Discord users who do not have a GPU capable of decoding AV1 will see a stream in the H.264 codec, as Discord uses P2P streaming and automatically switches to H.264 for all users to view.
