Intel Meteor Lake CPUs May Have VPU "Neural Engine" Acceleration

Tom from the YouTube channel “Moore's Law Is Dead” released a new video yesterday about possible leaks regarding Intel's future CPU architecture, codenamed Meteor Lake. According to these leaks, Intel's Meteor Lake is set to feature a VPU neural engine in the style of Apple's M1 chips.

Apple's neural engine can be seen in its desktops, laptops, and newer iPhones. But Intel also plans to take advantage of a technology similar to that of Apple developed by themselves.

A breakthrough would come with Meteor Lake CPUs

Intel has yet to launch its newest Alder Lake series of CPUs, which are speculated to hit the market on November 4. The host of the YouTube channel “moore's Law is Dead” believes that Intel is already preparing to launch an integrated vision processing unit (VPU) in the near future. If true, we'll likely see Intel's new technology in 2023.

Rumors suggest that the VPU of Intel Meteor Lake CPUs will take up space, embedded in the dies, alongside Intel's CPU core architecture, and will react very similarly to Apple's Neural Engine technology that is present in its M1 processors.

In the video, Tom explains how the VPU could process videos more efficiently, improving video output and image quality natively. Use the example of watching Netflix at streamed 4K resolution, rather than downgrading to 1080p due to individual bandwidth speeds. With Intel, using a low-power VPU to enhance video would take some of the processing power out of the CPU and, for example, it would be unoccupied with video in the background.
