The price of GDDR6 used in NVIDIA GeForce RTX is up to 70% higher than GDDR5 memory

NVIDIA GeForce RTX would be so expensive because GDDR6 memory is up to 70% more expensive than GDDR5 memory.

The price of the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards is being quite controversial. The new NVIDIA graphics offer support for Raytracing and for this they implement the new GDDR6 memories. These memories offer the possibility of reaching up to 14Gbps. The price of these graphics would be conditioned mainly by the GDDR6 memories. It seems that these new generation memories are up to 70% more expensive to manufacture than GDDR5.

GDDR6 are up to 70% more expensive than GDDR5

These new memories have been chosen for the NVIDIA RTX because they offer better performance than the GDDR5X. Pascal did not have Raytracing and DLSS which require higher memory bandwidth. This means that the Turing must use GDDR6 to avoid a bottleneck.

Through a report from 3Dcenter.org, which has had access to a price list from the wholesale electronics manufacturer Digi-Key, that GDDR6s are more expensive. According to this information, GDDR6 @ 14GHz is up to 70% more expensive than GDDR5 @ 8GHz at the same capacity. Obviously this ends up having an impact on the cost of manufacturing a graph and therefore, in our pocket.

Currently GDDR6s are in 14GHz, 13GHz and 12GHz versions. A few days ago the rumor also emerged of up to six versions of the RTX 2060, three with GDDR6 and three with GDDR5. This would be to offer much cheaper solutions with a significant performance sacrifice.

They have also highlighted that the savings of using six GDDR5 chips instead of six GDDR6 chips would be between $ 22-25. It is not clear if it is by memory chip or in general. We must wait for the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 to arrive to learn more about it.
