Announced by JEDEC the UFS 2.2 standard

Flash storage drives, such as SD cards and the like, are based on the UFS standard. This standard is managed and developed by JEDEC, the same one that develops the DDR RAM standard. JEDEC just announced the UFS 2.2 version that implements interesting improvements. This standard also affects cheap smartphone eMMC memories.

This standard is especially important in the budget smartphone market. Normally cheap smartphones use eMMC type memory, a standard that is being displaced by the UFS. This displacement is due to the fact that UFS offers more speed in reading and writing, and simultaneous handling of several storage technologies. So a UFS smartphone offers better performance than one with eMMC.

JEDEC Announces UFS 2.2 Standard

So far we could find the UFS 2.1 standards for low-end smartphones and UFS 3.1 for high-end smartphones. The arrival of the UFS 2.2 comes to replace the UFS 2.2 standard intended for low-end smartphones.

For this new UFS 2.2 standard the Write Booster feature has been integrated. This is the only major improvement of this new standard, which improves the writing speed over the preceding standard. What it will offer us will be improvements in the loading of applications, the cache and the like. A performance improvement that is always appreciated.

Mediatek has been the first to announce SoC with compatibility with this standard. It is possible that Qualcomm or Samsung, among others, should offer support for these memories shortly. There are no dates, but it is possible that the first smartphones with these memories will arrive by the end of the year, taking advantage of the Christmas period. The best thing is that users who buy an entry-level smartphone will get better benefits for the same or even for less money.
