Backblaze study indicates which are the most reliable hard drives on the market
Published a study of mechanical hard drives by Backblaze, which shows which are the ones with the lowest failure rate in 2018.
The reliability of the components is something that can be very interesting for users. Backblaze on a quarterly basis usually publishes what the failure rate of hard drives is, by manufacturer and capacity. The report offers interesting information such as what are the statistics such as service or uptime. Backblaze has given the data for all of 2018, something that can be very useful to know which is the best brand and which are the most reliable hard disk drives.
What are the most reliable hard drives?
For this study, more than 100.000 hard drives have been sampled throughout 2018. The sample size is quite large in a controlled environment, so the data is quite accurate in terms of the performance of the drives according to the manufacturer. This report gives a lot of data that is really interesting.
The units that have given the most problems are the Toshiba 14TB with a failure rate of 3%, which with such a large capacity, is normal. Seagate's have the most troubled drives, with two drives above 1% failure rate. Hitachi (HGST) has the lowest failure rate, with only one model above 1%. The funny thing about the study is that there is only one unit from Western Digital, with a failure rate of just over 2%.
It is also quite curious that 1TB and 2TB units, quite common in the market, have not been studied in this study. The unit that has not presented failures is the Toshiba 5TB, but there were only 45 in sample. Based on the number of drives, the best drive is the Hitachi 12TB, which of a total of 1.278 drives has only failed one.
