Due to a leak from the Eurasian Economic Commission, Gigabyte's Z690 product line has been revealed . This line will include motherboards that support either DDR4 or DDR5 RAM options , allowing users to choose a cheaper or more expensive motherboard depending on the type of memory they use.
Both Intel Alder Lake CPUs and DDR5 are being closely watched due to their potential, although some speculate that DDR4 may offer gamers higher speeds than DDR5 in certain cases. Early DDR5 memory modules are expected to have higher latency than high-end DDR4 modules, giving DDR4 a slight initial advantage, at least until DDR5 has been fully adopted and developed. It is also expected to be significantly more expensive and take longer to gain widespread adoption.
Gigabyte won't ditch DDR4 with Z690 base keys
The EEC has included a large number of motherboards from the Gigabyte and Aorus brands. DDR4-based motherboards will form the lower end of the Z690 series, with models like the Aorus Elite, Aorus Pro, and Aorus Elite AX coming in both DDR5 and DDR4 memory variants.
Intel's Alder Lake series of processors will feature integrated DDR4 and DDR5 memory controllers, allowing either standard to be fully compatible with Intel's next generation CPU processors. Its compatibility will depend on the choice of motherboard, as few motherboards are expected to support both DDR5 and DDR4 memory simultaneously. ASUS leaks have already suggested that differentiated motherboards between DDR5 and DDR4 Z690 are planned by the motherboard manufacturer.
Overclock3d speculates that motherboard manufacturers expect DDR5 memory to be quite expensive, even for enthusiasts, and are reluctant to produce dual-compatible boards to reduce costs. All of this suggests that DDR5 will take time to be adopted, at least on a large scale by consumers, and that it will be a long time before we see its full potential realized.
