Faced with the ever-increasing energy demand of top-of-the-range graphics cards, power supplies require more power and dedicated connectors to power these cards. For this there is the PCIe Gen5 connector for high-end graphics like some Founders Edition. No consumer power supplies have officially come out yet, though Gigabyte has announced its UD1000GM PG5 with this connector.
It is the company's first PCIe Gen5 compliant power supply. It is a compact 1000W 80+ Gold efficiency certified power supply with full modular connectors including the new power standard for next generation GPUs.
Gigabyte launches its first PCIe Gen5 power supply
The PCIe Express 5.0 specifications define a new connector and power cable officially known as specification 12VHPWR. Manufacturers haven't agreed on what to call it so consumers can easily tell what it is.
The most recent example comes from Gigabyte, who just announced their UD1000GM PG5 power supply. The company uses up to four different names in its official statement for this new connector/cable configuration: PCIe Gen5 cable, 12+4-pin cable, 16-pin cable, and 12VHPWR.
Those four names are correct, but since there is no common name accepted by the manufacturers, they all have so that when searching for any of those four names, the same result comes out. As for the power supply itself, it is a new variant of the existing model that replaces two 8-pin power connectors with a single 12+4-pin cable.
We do not know the price or release date of the Gigabyte UDM1000GM PG5 power supply. With the announcement of ASUS Loki, MSI MPG/MEG, and CoolerMaster Gen5 compatible fonts, customers will be spoiled for choice once the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, purportedly the first card to meet this standard, is released.
