Intel says AMD is “selling smoke” with Ryzen 7000 laptops

The rivalry between Intel and AMD is easily one of the most recurring themes in this consumer electronics sector, with many changes on the roadmap in response to what the rival is doing in each segment. AMD is currently selling the Ryzen 7000, its series of CPUs and APUs with Zen 4 architecture; which according to Digital Trends; Intel claims it sells smoke to consumers.

That's what they say according to a slide presentation posted on Intel's website titled "Core Truths – How the 'Latest Technology' is not always what it seems«. Its name translated into Spanish would be «Fundamental truths: how the 'latest technology' is not always what it seems», playing on the English name with which Intel names its consumer CPUs, the name Core, alluding to the number of cores it puts in its Intel Core line.

Intel compares AMD to used car and snake oil salesmen and says it sells smoke

To get the full context, you have to understand that the English expression "snake oil«, which translated would be «snake oil«, refers to the trope of the street vendor who at the beginning of the 20th century in the time of the Wild West, went around the towns selling supposed miracle solutions. That expression translated into Spanish would be «sell smoke«.

Snake Oil is also a board game that can be played for free online

Intel has compared AMD's Ryzen 7000 CPUs to selling smoke. Intel published its book Core Truths, in which it explains how the naming scheme of AMD mobile processors They begin by stating that "There is a long history of selling half-truths to unsuspecting customers.“Along with images of a snake oil salesman and a used car salesman, who also carry the stereotype of cheating customers, they did a comparison between the Ryzen 5 7520U and the Core i5-1335U. Intel’s CPU is 83% faster, according to the presentation, but it would seem that AMD’s would be better due to the older architecture that the AMD part uses.

Intel slide saying Intel is confusing consumers with portable CPUs

Last year, AMD changed its nomenclature for laptop CPUs, so that the figure indicating the architecture was in third position. Instead of matching architecture to generation, as Intel and AMD have done for years, AMD now says that all of its mobile processors are part of the latest Ryzen 7000 generation, regardless of which architecture they use.

In the current case where the third number in the name shows the architecture the CPU uses, a Ryzen 5 7640U uses the Zen 4 architecture, while the Ryzen 5 7520U It uses the Zen 2 architecture, while it is still in the 7000 line despite using cores from two generations ago. But it's not just Intel who says that AMD's new naming system for portable CPUs leads to confusion, as users have already said so at the time.
