Following the announcement of the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors, it was obvious that Intel had to make some kind of move. Now Intel has revealed details regarding the Rocket Lake-S processors that will come to compete with the Ryzen 5000. The new Rocket Lake-S processors will have a maximum of 8 cores and 16 threads, thus ending speculation about cores of the new processors .
The number of cores in the new Intel processors has been reduced due to an architecture change. Intel ditches the Skylake architecture used to date to use the Crypress Cove architecture. This architecture is the import of the 10nm Sunny Cove cores used in Tiger Lake, but manufactured in 14nm.

Gone is the Skylake architecture that did not give more of itself to import the Sunny Cove @ 14nm architecture at 10nm. Importing this architecture at 14nm reduces the number of possible cores in a DIE, limiting itself to 8 cores. Additionally, Intel reports that Rocket Lake-S will arrive with a "double-digit percentage" CPI improvement (10% or more).
It will be the 11th generation of Intel processors, where it will continue with the usual name. The 9-core Core i10900-10K will be replaced by the 9-core Core i11900-8K. And it is finally confirmed that Rocket Lake-S goes back to 8 cores and 16 threads.
Rocket Lake-S has also been confirmed to support DDR4 @ 3200MHz memory, an improvement over the current generation. The integrated graphics will be Xe-LP, which will offer up to 50% more performance than Intel Gen9. These processors will also be natively compatible with the PCIe 4.0 interface.
Intel indicates that Rocket Lake-S will be launched on the market during Q1 2021, in order to counter the Ryzen 5000. These new processors will arrive with a new chipset, the 500 Series and would be backward compatible with the 400 Series chipsets.
