Intel Announces Xeon Scalable Cooper Lake @ 14nm and Ice Lake @ 10nm
The new Xeon Scalable Cooper Lake @ 14nm and Ice Lake @ 10nm are announced by Intel, the latter arriving during the first half of 2020.
A few days ago, Intel announced its Ice Lake and Tiger Lake processors for laptops, tablets, and similar devices. These processors are the first to be based on a 10nm manufacturing process. Desktop processors will follow, and then those for servers. Regarding this latter family, the company has some news. Intel plans to launch two new families of Xeon Scalable processors between the end of 2019 and the first half of 2020.
Cooper Lake will be the latest iteration of Xeon Scalable processors based on 14nm lithography. After this family came the Ice Lake Xeon Scalable based on the 10nm lithography. Cooper Lake will have a 56-core version and it will be the first time that it is offered in socket solutions. Until now, the Xeon Scalable were based on BGA sockets.
Intel plans 10nm Xeon Scalable for the first half of 2020
These new Intel Cooper Lake processors will make use of a new socket, the LGA 4189, which will be compatible with the Ice Lake. If we compare it with the rest of Xeon, these Cooper Lake will double the number of cores in the same socket. These are built with artificial intelligence in mind and therefore offer support for bfloat16. Cooper Lake will have a simpler solution than the 9200-core Xeon Platinum 56.
Intel does not offer a specific date for 10nm processors, which is a problem. It should be noted that the AMD EPYC Rome @ 7nm are just around the corner and may mean a cut in Intel's market share.
The most interesting part is that those who bet on the Cooper Lake, can take out the processor, 'throw it away' and put an Ice Lake without having to buy everything new. Perhaps Intel seeing the success of its competitor, adopts a similar strategy or perhaps it is a mirage.
