Intel promises an 80% increase in CPI in just 3 years

Despite the recent launch of Intel Comet Lake-S processors, the kings of the market are the AMD Ryzen. At the moment it seems that AMD has everything tied and very well attacked with a competition in low hours. But things could change in the medium term, as Intel has just started. As they have said, they could increase in a few years the CPI of their processors by up to 80%.

Currently the Comet Lake-S are based on 14nm lithography, although in a much more advanced process. The latest processors have already seen that they bring many cores and a lot of frequency, but leaving more cold than heat. Ice Lake-U for 10nm based notebooks are pretty weak actually.

Intel wants to increase the CPI by 80% in 3 years

The company is currently putting more money on the table to streamline its 10nm lithography. The problem with this lithography is that it has 2.7 times more density than 14nm, hence all the problems when making monolithic processors. In addition, 10nm-based notebook processors, having few cores and discrete frequencies, their IPC has not surprised.

Sunny Cove (Ice Lake-U) barely improves the CPI of Skylake architecture by 18%. This data has forced Intel to use the Skylake architecture in Comet Lake-U / H processors for more frequencies and performance.

Willow Cove, according to the latest data, would mean a 25% improvement in the IPC compared to the Comet Lake-S. According to rumors, Rocket Lake-S should offer a major performance jump, who knows though.

By summer 2021, Tiger Lake-U processors intended for 10nm + based laptops should hit the market. Later, processors based on the Golden Cove architecture should reach the market with a 50% improvement in the IPC compared to Skylake. Finally, by 2023, the Alder Lake-S processors will arrive that will be based on the big.LITTLE architecture.

Meteor Lake-S will be Intel's big leap

Ocean Cove will be the architecture that will be based on 7nm and 7nm + lithography, which will offer a huge leap in performance. This would be the architecture that would deliver an 80% CPI improvement over Skylake. This architecture will give life to the Meteor Lake-S processors that should arrive in 2023.

According to the data for 2021 we will see the third version of the 10nm lithography based on the EUV process. Later it seems that this lithograph will share the leading role with the 7nm. It will be with 7nm when the company will return to its standard of new lithography every two years until reaching 1.4nm by 2029. Yes, by 2023 we should return to Intel's Tik-Tok system.

Logically, there is a long way to go before these processors reach the market and by then AMD we should already have Zen4 on the market, at least. AMD has managed to evolve its modular processor architecture very well.

Perhaps AMD will give it the scare of its life, since after 2023, AMD will follow another path with the PC and the processor, and the blue ones will be left behind.
