Intel's Bob Swan talks about the mistakes made with 10nm

During a conference, Bob Swan, CEO of Intel, has spoken about the errors that have led them to delay 10nm so many years.

There are many questions surrounding Intel's processors in the coming months. AMD has just launched its Ryzen 3000 series based on 7nm manufacturing. The company needs to do something, and that means launching 10nm processors. Bob Swan, Intel's CEO, addressed this issue at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colorado.

Swan has spoken about Intel's challenges and problems for the past two / three years. He has also spoken about the projects that the company is interested in and in which it wants to get involved. Above all, he highlighted how they have turned from a "data-centric" company to a "PC-centric" company and the difficulties they have encountered.

Bob Swan talks about Intel's problems and challenges

During the round of questions, he was asked about the disappearance of Moore's Law. Swan has spoken about how aggressive they have been in tackling the challenge. Instead of improving the transistor density doubling every two years. Swan highlighted that Intel is looking to improve density and offer bigger solutions to be the business leader.

It ensures that Intel's 10nm increase density by 2.7 times compared to 14nm. He comments that the five-year delay in the 10nm node has been due to how aggressive they have been. Swan stressed that "it is an increasingly difficult time, we set a more aggressive goal", and this is the reason for the delay. He has also highlighted that the density will be increased by only 2 times for the 7nm node that will arrive in two years.

On the future of the company, Swan highlights that they currently have a 30% share of the "silicon market." They emphasize that Intel tries to diversify the offering of processors and FPGAs, seeking to offer the best possible performance. They want to conquer the market, something that is complex.

He also highlighted that Artificial Intelligence is driving a new market. Swan highlights that autonomous vehicles could be a great source of revenue for Intel. The purchase of Mobileye was a strategy to be able to offer solutions to the emerging market and add value to the company.
