Previous performance data of the new Intel Ice Lake processors
The new Intel Ice Lake @ 10nm processors promise to deliver a significant leap in performance over Skylake processors.
In addition to giving many technical details about Ice Lake, Intel has also given performance details. As always, any benchmark of any brand is questionable, since they often use tricks to show how good they are against the competition. They are a primary benchmark of performance, then it remains to see the tests in real solutions and under general use conditions. Sunnycove brings a huge performance improvement over Skylake, but as if not to be. Ice Lake are the first processors of the new 10nm lithography and that shows a lot.
Major improvements over the Skylake
Before looking at the supposed performance benchmarks, let's look at some important improvements that power the performance improvement. The first aspect that improves with respect to Skylake is the L1 cache, which goes from 32KB to the current 48KB. The L2 cache has been increased, from 256KB to the current 512KB. The operations cache is also increased, going from 1.5K to 2.25K. In-flight loads go from 72 to the current 128, while in-flight storage goes from 56 to 72. New instructions have been implemented to improve cryptography performance (and security) as well as vector capabilities that include DL Boost . A more agile processor is achieved while being more secure.
Regarding performance improvements, especially Intel highlights the improvement in Artificial Intelligence thanks to DL Boost. Intel ensures that Resent 50, which is for standard workloads on IA interfaces, is a 2.5x improvement over Skylake. Perhaps the most interesting data is that the CPI increases by 18% compared to Skylake. The raw performance improvement is 1.4x, so the final performance improvement is noticeable.
Intel has also shown a couple of images in which we see a big difference in performance between Ice Lake and Skylake. It is a shame, because all the data is with synthetic software, they have not given data in games or in day-to-day applications. We assume that these data will be given when they present, one of these days, the desktop version of these processors.
