Last week, Intel officially announced its Meteor Lake CPUs, designed for lightweight laptops and focused on improved energy efficiency and the inclusion of a VPU for consumer-oriented AI tasks . For years there has been speculation about whether Meteor Lake CPUs would be available for desktop computers, and Intel has once again had to deny it.
Since Meteor Lake CPUs are designed for laptops, they will use a Ball Grid Array (BGA) connector, not an LGA socket, making them incompatible with current sockets. This BGA connector will make them compatible with compact desktop systems and all-in-one PCs from OEM manufacturers.
Intel still has to insist that there will be no Meteor Lake desktop CPUs
In an interview last week, a senior Intel executive stated that Intel's Meteor Lake processors would arrive in desktop computers in 2024. However, they will not be in the LGA1851 form factor . Therefore, the first CPUs to use that form factor will be Arrow Lake , which are expected in the second half of 2024.
The use of laptop CPUs in AIO desktop computers and small-format PCs is common, so it would be in them where we find a future Meteor Lake CPU. There will be no shortage of comparisons of high-performance Meteor Lake CPUs for laptops versus existing Raptor Lake processors for desktops and laptops. and when they come out, it will be necessary to understand that Meteor Lake were designed with the intention of being more efficient, not more powerful.
The CPU uses a multi-tile design with a computing tile manufactured with Intel 4 process technology, which uses extreme ultraviolet lithography; and a graphics tile manufactured by TSMC. Meanwhile, Intel 7 process technology could enable higher clock speeds thanks to an improved power supply rail.
