We talk a lot about Intel Core Alder Lake processors, as they are the CPUs Intel promotes most and those most in demand by users, since their Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium series are more geared towards mass purchase and manufacturing low-cost equipment for education and offices. However, that doesn't make them immune to overclocking or to achieving good results, as demonstrated by overclocking an Intel Pentium Gold G7400T CPU to 5,8 GHz.
The overclocking of this CPU, priced at just $64 in the United States, has been surprising, as it reaches higher speeds than the base clock of the i9-12900K, the flagship CPU of the Alder Lake generation . This is a case of extreme overclocking , achieved under exceptional circumstances and most likely not covered by the warranty.
An ultra-cheap office CPU clocks in faster than Alder Lake's flagship
This milestone belongs to overclocker Hicookie, who wanted to overclock an Alder Lake CPU from the Pentium family. It consists of two cores, four threads, and a base clock speed of 3,1 GHz, combined with 2,5MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache. It has a base TDP of 35 watts, so it doesn't require additional cooling.
The intention of this overclocking was to see how far a cheap CPU can go in terms of performance when combined with top-of-the-line components. The configuration is made up of a Gigabyte Aorus Z690 Tachyon motherboard, and liquid nitrogen cooling to support up to 1.656 watts. Hicookie used the same technique that Der8auer used to overclock two non-K Alder Lake processors: via the BIOS that allows overclocking a CPU that stock doesn't.
He managed to increase the processor's base clock multiplier to 187 MHz, and then subjected it to performance tests with multiple tools to reach a total clock speed of 5.808 MHz. The result has been verified by HD Tecnologia and demonstrates the overclocking capabilities of the Intel Alder Lake series, even under extreme overclocking conditions.
