Intel Xeon W-3175X 28-core for overclocking to be withdrawn from the market

Intel has announced the end of official support for its only Xeon W processor with 28 cores and unlocked multiplier. Originally, the Intel Xeon W-3175X was intended to compete against AMD's Ryzen Threadripper processors, with the Xeon W-3175X offering a high number of cores and great overclocking capabilities.

Intel claims that the demand for these types of products has gone to others of the same brand. For normal workstations that are not designed for CPU overclocking, Intel offers its Xeon W-3375 38-core and Xeon W-3365 32-core processors based on the Ice Lake-SP series.

The Xeon W-3175X will soon be obsolete

Anyone interested in purchasing an Intel Xeon W-3175X model should request it by April 29, 2022. The latest Xeon W-3175X CPU will be shipped by Intel on October 28, 2022. Intel originally demonstrated its processor 3175-core Xeon W-28X for extreme workstations at Computex 2018 and made it clear that it could run at 5.0 GHz with all of its cores turned on. It was seen that it could achieve 5.0 GHz when overclocked and cooled with a cooler.

Intel clocked the processor at a base 3.10 GHz and a 4.30 GHz maximum single-core turbo mode, but since the chip comes with an unlocked multiplier out of the box, it could be overclocked beyond 3.10 GHz. It has a TDP. 255W, and consumed more during overclocking, so motherboard manufacturers for the Xeon W-3175X had to implement rather extreme voltage regulation modules (VRMs) with about 30 power stages to power the processor as well. that motherboards were extremely expensive. Only Asus, EVGA, and Gigabyte offered platforms for the unlocked Xeon W processor.

Between being priced at $ 2.999 and requiring a very expensive motherboard, advanced cooler, six-channel DDR4 memory, and a high-performance power supply, Intel's Xeon W-3175X has never been a very popular choice. And there was no shortage of options to choose from because AMD Ryzen Threadripper machines offered more cores at a lower price.
