LG loses lawsuit against AMD for violating patents related to graphics technologies

Lawsuit for patents for graphics technologies is won by AMD against LG Electronics, which is a big problem for the company.

The patent and technology war between large companies is a constant in the industry. In 2017, AMD filed a lawsuit against LG, MediaTek, VIZIO, and Sigma for patent infringement. Months later, in August of that year, it was announced that AMD had won the lawsuit. Then it was said that LG had reached an agreement, something that appears to have been false. We now know that AMD has won a new trial, in this case before the United States Court of Appeals.

AMD wins lawsuit against LG for different patents

It seems that LG was sued again by AMD for the infringement of three patents in the graphic section. These patents have to do with Unified Shaders technology. The patents directly affect several SmartTVs and smartphones of the company. It affects the graphics cores used in these devices, which are manufactured by MediaTek, who has also been condemned.

Previously, the Board of Patent Trials and Appeals commented that patents were owned by ATI. They stressed that said claimed intellectual property was "too obvious in light of the state of the art"

A three-judge jury unanimously decided that ATI had “conceived its inventions before the state of the art”. What the court has ruled is that these patents were the result of an ATI investigation that thus led to the invention of them. They emphasize that they were not obvious steps in the evolution of the technique.

As ATI was taken over by AMD, intellectual property changed hands. There is still no data on how much they will have to pay for these patents, but it points to be a good sum. It seems that LG has it quite black in this case.
