The capacity of the hard drives will reach up to 80 TB

Showa Denko has developed the technology to manufacture hard drives up to 80 TB. The new technology they have developed is based on HARM technology, Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording. This technology has been developed with servers in mind, although it would also be possible to use it in a home.

Over the years, we have seen files take up more and more space. That is why today it is unthinkable to use outdated floppy disks, since an image already exceeds its capacity. As computing has advanced, more power and capacity has been required.

Storage and the cloud

These new storage units are intended for servers, since they are the ones who need it most. That does not mean that we cannot use it in our homes, only that it was intended for servers. And that is a big problem for all the companies that store our files, like cloud storage.

Data centers are getting hotter and need more space. So this new technology is going to solve a big problem for them. Today a HDD used in a server it usually has a storage of up to 12TB. Therefore, a single hard drive with this new technology can replace at least 7 current hard drives.

This new technology is a great boon for data centers. Since if they have more space while maintaining the same storage, they can take care of other problems, such as temperature. This would achieve, with a small investment, improvements in performance and storage cost.

Data centers could save money by requiring less space. That could lead them to rent or buy smaller spaces of land. Although it can also be taken as an option to expand your business and increase the number of HDDs.
