Apple announces the M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs for its iMac devices

Apple today announced enhanced versions of the M2 chip: the next-generation M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs. The M2 Pro expands upon the M2 architecture to offer up to a 12-core CPU and up to a 19-core GPU, along with up to 32GB of fast unified memory. Meanwhile, the M2 Max builds upon the M2 Pro's capabilities with up to a 38-core GPU, double the unified memory bandwidth, and up to 96GB of unified memory, making it the world's most powerful and efficient chip for a professional laptop.

Both SoCs also include enhanced custom technologies such as a faster 16-core neural engine and Apple's powerful multimedia engine. The M2 Pro will be coming to Mac mini for the first time, while the M2 Pro and M2 Max will be coming to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

This is the Apple M2 Pro

Built on a second-generation 5nm process technology, the M2 Pro SoC comprises 40.000 billion transistors. It boasts 200 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and up to 32 GB of low-latency unified memory. With 10- or 12-core CPU models consisting of eight high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, it delivers up to 20% faster multithreaded CPU performance than the 10-core CPU in the M1 Pro.

The M2 Pro's GPU can be configured with up to 19 cores, three more than the M1 Pro's GPU; and includes a larger L2 cache. Graphics speed is up to 30% faster than the M1 Pro, which translates into a huge performance boost in image processing and enables console-quality gaming.

The M2 Max bills itself as the world's most powerful and efficient chip for a professional notebook

The 67.000 million transistors, which is 10.000 million more than M1 Max and more than triple that of M2; make the M2 Max take the performance and capabilities of Apple silicon even further. Its 400GB/s of unified memory bandwidth is double that of the M2 Pro, quadruple that of the entry-level M2, and supports up to 96GB of fast unified memory.

It features the same next-generation 12-core CPU as the M2 Pro. The GPU is even more powerful, with up to 38 cores, and is paired with a larger L2 cache. Graphics speed is up to 30% faster than the M1 Max . All of this, combined with up to 96GB of memory, allows the new MacBook Pro with M2 Max to handle graphics-intensive projects.

macOS Ventura with M2 Pro and M2 Max

Along with the announcement of the new M2 processors, Apple has also announced the advantages that macOS Ventura will offer. Mac computers equipped with Apple silicon have access to more than 15.000 native applications and plug-ins that take full advantage of the power of the M-series chips.
