Micron announces at CES 2020 that it is already shipping DDR5 modules for testing

There is a lot of talk that this year the price of DRAM chips for DDR4 could go up in price. During CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Micron, one of the leading memory chip makers, announced that it is beginning to ship samples of DDR5 RAM. This means that the new standard is already in the final testing phase and production could start shortly.

DDR5 memories will offer us twice the frequency with respect to DDR4 with lower consumption. Theoretically, we should also see the capacity of each RAM module doubled. A product, on the other hand, that first reached the professional segment such as servers and Data Centers and then the average user.

Micron begins distributing DDR5 samples

Micron reports that its RDIMM ( Registered DIMM ) modules for servers are already being shipped to partners. These are sample models for testing and are based on the 1znm lithographic process. Furthermore, as mentioned, they offer double the density compared to DDR4, increased reliability, and an 85% performance boost.

Perhaps one of the most outstanding aspects of these reports is that energy efficiency is improved by reducing consumption. Improvements such as MIR have been implemented, which improves the distribution of signals. Other technologies such as PRECHARGE and REFRESH have been added, of which no data has been given.

Comparison between DDR4 and DDR5 RAM

If Micron already distributes chips for testing, it means that development is well underway. Despite this, it seems unlikely that these memories will arrive before 2021.

Note that AMD in 2021 will change the socket for its Ryzen processors and could already implement DDR5 RAM. This is not official, but it indicates that the socket change is due to the change in the RAM memory standard. We assume that Intel will also launch processors with support for this standard.
