Micron announces its 4.0TB capacity PCIe 30 SSD
Micron's new 9400 SSDs have entered mass production and will be available in formats with storage capacities up to 30,72 TB. They are clearly designed for data centers and servers that prioritize transfer speed over the cost and storage capacity offered by hard drives.
In a standard two-bay, 24-drive server, the 30,72 TB 9400 SSDs that Micron has just put into production can provide 737 TB of data per server. With each drive capable of delivering 1,6 million IOPS for 100% 4K random reads, they would have high speeds that would justify their higher prices.
Micron already reaches 30 Tb in SSD for professional clients and data centers
Micron has stated that its drives are capable of delivering 77% more IOPS per watt than its previous generation drives. This allows them to reduce server power consumption and operating costs, one of the most significant factors impacting server maintenance. Micron also claims to outperform its competitors, stating that its drives can deliver " 71% more IOPS for 90% read/10% write workloads (exceeding 1 million IOPS) and 69% more IOPS for 70% read/30% write workloads (exceeding 940.000 IOPS) ."
Micron has tested its 9400 SSDs in a wide variety of workloads, with the results shown below:
- RocksDB: The 9400 drive delivered up to 23% better performance and up to 34% better workload responsiveness.
- Aerospike Database: up to 2,1 times higher peak performance and superior responsiveness.
- VIDIA Magnum IO GPU Direct: Micron's 9400 outperformed the competition by delivering 25% better performance in a dynamic system with compute tasks, a critical enhancement for AI environments.
- Multi-tenant cloud architectures: the Micron 9400 drive offers more than twice the overall performance of a competitive performance-focused SSD and up to 62% faster response time.
Micron's new 9400 SSDs will be available soon with drive capacity options from 6,4TB to 30,72TB. These drives use the U.3 interface, which is backwards compatible with U.2 sockets.
