AMD's Navi 23 could integrate dedicated hardware for Ray Tracing
New rumor suggests that AMD's Navi 23 GPU coming in 2020 will have dedicated hardware for light ray tracing technology.
During the presentation of the AMD Navi 10 graphics cards we met RDNA, the company's new architecture. This is specifically developed by and for gaming and eliminating GCN. The company continues to work on the development of new chips based on this architecture, but already for next year. And it is that the Navi 23 GPU has been leaked, which would have as a great feature, that it supports Ray Tracing.
GCN is the base architecture of Polaris, to name the most recent graphics based on it. The problem with this architecture is that it was developed as a hybrid for gaming and computing. Its computing performance has been good, but in gaming it has left much to be desired. The last iteration of GCN was Vega 10 and Vega 20, two performance disasters, consumption and temperature.
Native Ray Tracing for Navi 23
According to sources from wccftech, the new Navi 23 GPU that would arrive in mid-2020 has its sights set on the high-end of NVIDIA. They indicate that it could have similar performance to the RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2080 Ti.
Navi 23 would be based on TSCM's 7nm + lithography and RDNA 2 architecture. This new architecture would add dedicated hardware for light ray tracing, such as NVIDIA's Turing. So adding Ray Tracing support in December's Adrenalin package would pave the way for the second generation of Navi.
Although these rumors are just that, rumors, theoretically Microsoft's Project Scarlett and Sony's PlayStation 5 support Ray Tracing. It should be noted that the consoles of both companies are writing checks that we will see if they have funds or not.
What is evident is that AMD is required by NVIDIA to support Ray Tracing. The industry has taken with interest this new technology that NVIDIA currently sells at a price of gold.
