Nintendo and Sony are the first to change their warranty policy, under threat from the US FTC

Nintendo and Sony are the first companies to comply with the FTC's request to change warranty policies to avoid significant penalties and a lengthy legal battle.

Last week we echoed how the Federal Trade Commission of the United States or FTC, had told Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo that they should change the warranty policy of their products and that they should remove the stickers from 'Warranty Void if Removed', which caused the guarantee of one of their products to be automatically lost if this label was broken. The FTC advised of significant penalties and legal battle. Nintendo has made changes to its policies, to avoid problems with the FTC.

Currently, the Federal Trade Commission has not fined the aforementioned firms yet, it has only sent them a letter warning that they should change the policies. Not only has he sent the warning to these companies, among other companies they have also warned HTC, ASUS or Hyundai, so that they comply with the regulations or they could face important legal action.

Nintendo has been the first to modify the warranty policy in the United States and Canada, and they have also published a statement stating that "the policies have been revised." Nintendo also comments that the problem was not due to the stickers, but to third-party hardware. The company indicated in a clause that the user could not use 'products not sold or certified by Nintendo' and if it was done, the guarantee was invalidated, something illegal.

Sony has also joined these legal modifications, published that 'the warranty will not apply in case the device is damaged by the use of a peripheral product without an official license'. In addition, it is indicated that 'the guarantee will not apply in case of being damaged by opening the product or in case of damage caused as a result of the action of a third party that is not represented by SIE or does not have the official authorization from SIE to offer such service '
