When you upgrade to a new CPU, it's understood that you'll need a new motherboard, and with that come additional expenses. Your old RAM might no longer be compatible, since you've upgraded from DDR4 to DDR5. Then there's the issue of the CPU cooler. Many CPUs come with one pre-installed, but enthusiasts often prefer to choose their own, which can lead to compatibility problems due to the new socket. Well, this socket issue won't be very common , though it won't be nonexistent, with the transition from AM4 to AM5 for Noctua coolers.
We recently reviewed one of them: the Noctua NH P1 passive heatsink, which we loved because it can easily dissipate heat from the most basic CPUs to reduce noise by not using fans. Almost all of the rest of Noctua's heatsinks on the market will follow in the footsteps of being AM5 compatible as Noctua has stated.
Your current Noctua heatsink can be used for AM5
AMD has ensured broad compatibility with CPU coolers by using the same hole spacing for both AM4 and AM5 sockets. This applies as long as manufacturers use standard backplates . Noctua is one such company, and with a few exceptions, all models in their current lineup are directly compatible with AMD's new socket.
When most PC enthusiasts think of beige and brown fans, they automatically think of Noctua. The Austrian company manufactures fans and CPU coolers of various sizes and is known for the high quality of its manufacturing and the technical support of its products. The company has been retrofitting heatsinks for years with mounting kits for modern CPU sockets.
Instead of performing significant conversion steps, the manufacturer has left the same hole spacing as in the LGA1718 (AM5) socket, as in the AM4 socket. Therefore, any CPU cooler that fits a standard AM4 backplate will be directly compatible with the AM5 socket . However, some coolers, such as the NH-L9a-AM4 and NM-AM4-L9aL9i, are not compatible, as they were designed specifically for the AM4 socket.
This means that virtually all models in Noctua's current range for sale are compatible with the new socket. So, you can keep it for when you want to make the move to the Ryzen 7000 generation, which is expected to be released sometime this year.
