Leonardo, the world's most powerful AI supercomputer to be based on 14.000 NVIDIA A100 GPUs
The best bet NVIDIA has made in recent years has to do with offering solutions for artificial intelligence. It currently lacks real competition, as its solutions are the best on the market. Well, it has just been known that NVIDIA and Cineca have closed an agreement to develop the Leonardo supercomputer, based on the NVIDIA A100 that will arrive in 2021.
Before the Ampere architecture, NVIDIA solutions were already among the top of the market. But it is that the solutions based on the Ampere architecture are leaving the solutions of the competition far behind. This can be seen especially in the gaming segment, where it has a huge advantage over AMD, its main rival.

Who puts the power to this Leonardo computer are practically 14.000 NVIDIA A100 GPUs. These silicones will arrive in a configuration of 4 for each of the nodes. Something interesting is that each node will be based on 1 Intel Sapphire Rapids processor, which will be launched in 2021. This supercomputer will also be one of the first to use DDR5 RAM and support PCIe 5.0.
Regarding the performance data, under FP16 this new supercomputer should offer about 10 Exaflops of power. And it is based on the A100 GPUs that integrate 3rd Generation Tensor Cores. This supercomputer will additionally also be extremely FP64.
According to the data, Leonardo should be in the Top 3 of the TOP5000 list, which includes the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. To give us an idea, it would be about 7 times more powerful than Selene, the most powerful NVIDIA solutions-based supercomputer today.
Cineca also intends to develop three other supercomputers, also based on NVIDIA A100 GPUs. Next up would be MeluXina in Luxembourg with no less than 800 A100 GPUs. Then we have the one destined for the National Supercomputing Center IT4Innovations of the Czech Republic of 560 GPU A100. Finally we have Vegas in Slovenia with 240 A100 GPUs.
