NVIDIA has been sued for infringing five patents
“Today we are filing a lawsuit against NVIDIA for patent infringement. We believe that NVIDIA is using our semiconductor patent technology in some of its CPUs and graphics processors and we have been talking to NVIDIA for several years about obtaining a patent license.
Ultimately, we were unable to reach an agreement and felt that we had to take this action to defend our intellectual property rights. We presented the case in the Federal Court of Delaware affirming 5 patents ”, explained Jon Kirchner, CEO of Xperi Corp.
Both Xperi and the subsidiaries work on the invention and subsequent tendering of all kinds of technologies. Among them there are patents for image and sound codecs, such as DTX: X, IMAX or Virtual: X, among others. Currently the company has notorious clients such as Sony, LG, Samsung, Tencent or Alibaba.
Patent Infringement Regarding Semiconductor Designs.
Not only does Xperi register patents, it is also a company specialized in offering semiconductor license packages and IP interconnection technology technologies. They claim that NVIDIA has infringed five patents in the United States, related to semiconductor designs.
NVIDIA develops its chips, but it is TSMC who is in charge of manufacturing the silicon. Xperi says that the responsibility rests with NVIDIA and must answer for these patent infringements. They allege that the company is responsible for the architectural designs and TSMC is only limited to production.
Xperi has already sued and won lawsuits against Samsung and Broadcom in the past for infringing on three of the patents that NVIDIA has allegedly copied. Possibly the same thing happens this time. It is not known how much they paid and how much it cost to acquire licenses from Samsung and Broadcom.
