NVIDIA's recently launched RTX 4070 graphics card doesn't appear to be performing well in terms of global sales. These poor sales could lead to a production cut for a month to avoid overwhelming retailers.
According to the Chinese forums Board Channel, reports indicate that NVIDIA has informed its AICs that it will be cutting off the supply of the GeForce RTX 4070 for a month . The reason given is the poor response to the graphics card.
NVIDIA wouldn't do well either with the RTX 4070
While the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card sold a lot of units on its initial launch day, subsequent days haven't been as strong. Since its release, the card continues to have a lot of stock at retailers worldwide . Reference-priced cards are the ones moving units, with no one seeming willing to pay more for the premium models, as they are priced much closer to the RTX 4070 Ti, which offers a greater performance boost.
The reduction in supply in a month is expected to minimize the effects of a potential oversupply, both in upstream supply chains and in stores. NVIDIA has already pre-ordered TSMC's 4N wafers for their RTX 4000 range of GPUs, so if more supply is needed, they can push for it. But it's something NVIDIA is avoiding because it wants its AICs to get rid of the last remaining RTX 3000 inventories.
Techepiphany reports that the RTX 4070 is selling well in Germany, outselling other cards. However, this could be due to its recent launch, and things could change significantly in the coming week. At Newegg US, the RTX 4070 is still in stock at the recommended retail price and has not yet appeared on the best-seller list.
NVIDIA GeForce 70-series GPUs have historically been as fast as the latest generation's flagship, but the RTX 4070 is considered the smallest performance jump compared to its 80-series predecessor. Therefore, it's quite possible to get an RTX 3080 for similar performance, possibly at a better price.
