Gigabyte Z490 motherboards will support Intel Rocket Lake and PCIe 4.0

Gigabyte confirms that its Z490 chipset motherboards will have support for Rocket Lake-S processors and PCIe 4.0 interface, as well as support for Resizable BAR

Gigabyte has announced support for the upcoming Rocket Lake-S processors. All Gigabyte Z490 motherboards will now support the new Intel Rocket Lake-S processors. Additionally, the Z490 boards will support the PCIe 4.0 interface with Intel's 11th Generation processors. This was more or less predictable due to the construction of the high-end motherboards.

The Rocket Lake-S family is based on 14nm lithography, being the last to use this node. The design is based on Sunny Cove @ 10nm for the Tiger Lake-U, but imported to the 14nm node. A design that has been called Cypress Cove and that leaves behind the Skylake design, due to vulnerabilities.

Regarding the PCIe 4.0 interface, it is an intermediate step between PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 5.0, which will bring great news. The PCI Express 4.0 interface only offers a performance improvement over NMVe SSDs, with read and write improvements. The problem is that NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDs are extremely expensive and their use is currently minimal.

Returning to the Gigabyte Z490 motherboards, these will support the new generation Intel Core processors. In the press release the company also reports that motherboards with H470 chipset will support the 11th Generation of processors. It is not yet clear when a BIOS for this support will be released.

Something interesting is that Gigabyte under the PCIe 4.0 interface could enable Resizable BAR technology. This technology allows improved performance with RX 6000 graphics, as with AMD SAM.

To support the Rocket Lake-S and PCIe 4.0 processors, we will simply have to update the BIOS of our motherboard. The new BIOS is called F20 and will be available on the Gigabyte website in the next few days.
