PlayStation 5 will be based on AMD Ryzen and AMD Navi and will feature an SSD

The specifications of the PlayStation 5 have been revealed, which will be based on an AMD Ryzen processor and an AMD Navi graphics.

One of the biggest mysteries was what hardware Sony's new console, the PlayStation 5, would have. We knew it would feature an AMD Ryzen processor with graphics, possibly Navi, but now it's confirmed. Wired has revealed the hardware that Sony's new console will include. Lisa Su herself has echoed this news, as expected.

Sony's new console will be based on a custom Ryzen 3000 processor. According to the information revealed, it will have 8 Zen 2 cores of 7nm lithography. The package will feature a 7nm lithography Radeon Navi graphics. In both cases the silicones will be produced by TSMC. No further Navi data has been given, except that it will have the power to run RayTracing or a similar version.

This new PlayStation 5 leaves out the slow and obsolete mechanical hard drives or HDD and will have a solid state drive or NVMe SSD. Thanks to this unit, the loading times of the console will be reduced and it will be much more efficient. It will use other GDDR6 memory for the entire system, so it will be shared between CPU and GPU.

A development kit for the new console has been tested by Insomniac Games, using the Spider-Man game. The PlayStation 4 takes about 15 seconds to launch the game and the new Sony console does it in 0.8 seconds. You can clearly see the big leap in performance just from going from HDD to SSD. It is the first time in years that the hardware of a console will be moderately to the height of the hardware of PC.

It has also been revealed that the PlayStation 4 catalog will be backward compatible with the new Sony console. It will seek to enhance virtual reality with new PlayStation VR glasses. In addition, the PlayStation VR will be enhanced with the implementation of 3D Audio.
