Sony says that PS5 in suspended mode will have a consumption of only 0.5W

They assure from Sony that their next console, the PlayStation 5, will have a consumption in suspended mode of only 0.5W, something that seems difficult to achieve.

Computer hardware is becoming increasingly efficient, especially thanks to lithography. Nevertheless, there is a theoretical limit to energy efficiency and consumption. Well, Sony claims that the PlayStation 5 will be a much more environmentally friendly console than its predecessor. According to the company, this new console will consume less power in sleep mode than its predecessor.

Looking for energy efficiency is undoubtedly his thing, but where it really is interesting is ingame. We must bear in mind that the greatest consumption of a console is when we are using it. The suspended mode of a console (or computer) is not the usual state of the same, it is usually a rather casual state.

PlayStation 5 will reduce consumption in sleep mode

The reduction in power consumption in sleep mode seems perfectly normal. The processor and graphics card will be based on a 7nm process, which already makes it more efficient. GDDR6 memory is much more efficient than GDDR5. And the major upgrade—switching from an HDD to an SSD—are key factors in reducing power consumption.

Sony claims that if 1 million users turn on this feature, they will consume as much electricity as 000 US households. They estimate that the suspension consumption of the console is 0.5W. Despite everything, it seems quite complicated, since an SSD usually has between 0.5-1W in suspension, at least.

“At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we have made significant commitments and efforts to reduce PS4 power consumption by using efficient technologies such as the System-on-a-Chip architecture that integrates a high-performance graphics processor, size reduction, power scale and power saving modes like Suspend-to-RAM ”, Jim Ryan sure

The reality is that it seems more like a marketing strategy than anything else. We will see once the console is released on the market if it is capable of achieving the promised efficiency. Much is said about the next consoles and everything seems to be quite exaggerated.
