There is a new rumor about the AMD Navi and it is that in the last drivers they would have found references that indicate that they would be based on GCN.
During Computex 2019 we will undoubtedly see the new AMD Ryzen based on 7nm lithography. EPYC are also expected to be featured and possibly a Threadripper as well, although the latter is unlikely. What we do not know is if we will see new graphics cards from AMD, although it will not be due to rumors. We have seen rumors in the last of the most varied, most of them, quite implausible. Now a rumor appears that would confirm that Navi is based on the GCN architecture.
Rumor indicates that AMD Navi would be based on GCN
There are people who search the drivers for information about upcoming components and sometimes the hare jumps. A reference to "GFX1010" has been located within the latest AMD drivers. Possibly this name refers to the architecture that replaces Vega, which was the ninth generation.
Specifically within the latest drivers this reference has been found: "EF_AMDGPU_MACH_AMDGCN_GFX1010". Some have run to say that Navi is being talked about, although it may or may not be. We must not rule out that AMD is preparing new Ryzen APUs and could refer to the graphics that they will integrate. Quite a mystery with which we prefer to be quite cautious.
Graphics Core Next is a manufacturing architecture that arrived with the HD 7000 Series in 2012. We have seen with the two iterations of Vega that it does not give more of itself, with poor performance and absurd consumption. If Navi really is GCN we will see that it uses a design and instructions equal to Vega, Polaris and predecessors since 2012.
The most curious thing is that since GCN is in the market, NVIDIA has increased the market share. The boom was in 2015 with AMD Polaris and NVIDIA Pascal, with a brutal jump. While it is true that the AMD improve over time in performance, but not in consumption, the NVIDIA are better from the first moment. It seems that NVIDIA is launching better quality solutions that do not require constant driver-based optimizations.
