Ryzen 5 3500X: AMD processor matches Intel Core i5-9400F in gaming performance

They make a comparison between the Ryzen 5 3500X and the Core i5-9400F, showing that the AMD and Intel processor are very even.

This week, AMD unveiled the Ryzen 5 3500X processor. Ultimately, this processor will only be sold to assemblers in China, so it won't be available worldwide. This processor features 6 cores and 6 threads, thus eliminating SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading). It would be positioned slightly below the Ryzen 5 3600X, the entry-level processor in the new family.

Such a processor should perform similarly to the Intel Core i5-9400F. This processor is also 6 cores and 6 threads and also comes in Boost mode at 4.1GHz. Come on, these two processors cannot be more equal. Neither has integrated graphics, a similarity that is also noteworthy.

Ryzen 5 3500X performs like the Core i5-9400F

One of the unknowns of the Ryzen 5 3500X is a price, since this processor will only be sold to assemblers. The Intel processor is around 140-150 euros, so it is a very competitive price. Possibly the price for 1 000 units of this AMD processor is quite low, who knows.

What interests us is that Expreview has published a review of the processor, including benchmarks. It was subjected to synthetic tests such as PCMark 10, WinRAR, 7-Zip, and Blender. Using Cinebench R20 as an example, we see that the Core i5-9400F scores 430 points in single-threaded tests and 2,380 points in multi-threaded tests. The Ryzen 5 3500X, in the same software, scores 467 points in single-threaded tests and 2650 points in multi-threaded tests.

If we compare them in games, the thing could not be more even. For the benchmark an RX 5700 XT has been used. The performance is pretty much the same as the Ryzen 5 3600 and it's also close to the Core i5-9400F. Some benchmarks are won by the Ryzen 5 3500X, others lose them and in several there is a performance tie.

Consumption has also been looked at. According to the data, the Core i5-9400F under AIDA64 has a consumption of 111W. The Ryzen 5 3500X in the same test consumes 124W. A ridiculous consumption difference.

In conclusion, say that the two processors are practically the same, except for the manufacturer and the lithographs. A pity that this processor does not reach, at least for now, the general market, because it would be good.
