They bring all the cores of the Ryzen 9 3950X to 5.0GHz through extreme overclocking

They manage to bring the 9-core Ryzen 3950 16X to 5.0GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling, breaking several overclocking records.

At the end of AMD's Keynote during E3 2019, Lisa Su, CEO of the company, introduced us to the Ryzen 9 3950X. This is a 16-core processor, the first for the 'gaming' market and would be a hybrid between a gaming processor and a processor for Workstation. It is a powerful and cheaper solution than those offered by its direct competitor, Intel. After the presentation, some benchmarks with overclocking to this processor have been revealed. Some tests that have been carried out with liquid nitrogen, since cooling so many nuclei is not an easy task

The company already announced days before that it would carry out a demonstration of overclocking its processors. It is well known that the first and second generation Ryzen are not at all friends of overclocking. These seem to have more room to play, as we have seen. And it is that after the presentation of the Ryzen 9 3950X they have managed to bring their 16 cores to 5.0GHz using liquid nitrogen.

This AMD processor can reach 4.7GHz maximum frequency, as long as it is well cooled. To improve heat transfer, it has been chosen to drop the IHS to the DIE. What allows this is that the transfer is more efficient and the heat can be dissipated much better.

During the exhibition they have achieved that the 16 cores of the Ryzen 9 3950X have all their cores at 5.0GHz at a voltage of 1.608V. LN2 has been used to cool the heat and several benchmarks have been made with which several records have been broken.

As a motherboard, the MSI MEG X570 GODLIKE, one of the top-of-the-range motherboards on the market, has been used. It was accompanied by G.Skill Trident Z Royal DDR4 @ 4533MHz memories.

The records broken are:

  • Cinebench R15: 5434 points (Previous record: Core i9-9960X - 5320 points)
  • Cinebench R20: 12167 points (Previous record: Core i9-7960 - 10895 points)
  • Geekbench 4: 65499 points (Previous record: Core i9 7960X - 60991 points)
